PAEDIATRICS - Skin

Baby's skin characteristics:

1)COLOUR:
a)STORK'S BEAK MARK
Def : pink discolouration of skin
Site : neck , eyelids, glabella
Not significant

b)PALLOR
Causes : Anemia
              Pheripheral constriction



Pallor







c) CYANOSIS

(i) CENTRAL - Sites: Lips
                                   Tongue
                                    Mucus Membrane of Mouth
                              
                           Indicates: Hypoxia

   (ii) PHERIPHERAL  - aka ACROCYANOSIS
                                      Blue pheripheries but pink centrally
                                      Indicates: Normal, it is common in early minute and hours of life.



 
















d) PLETHORA
Colour : red
Causes : (i) vasodilatation
             (ii) Polycythemia
             (iii) Vascular overload


e) JAUNDICE
Def : Yellowish discolouration of skin and sclera
Types: (i) PHYSIOLOGICAL
                -usually appear on 2nd day of life
                - upto 2 weeks

           (ii) PATHOLOGICAL
                 - appear at 1st day of life
                 - more than 2 weeks
                 - requires investigations

Jaundice



f) MONGOLIAN BLUE SPOT

Definition: large with bluish tinge
                usually fades in first year of life
Site : Buttocks
         Backs
         Thights

Mongolian Blue Spot

g) MILIA
Definition : occur due to sebaceous gland hyperplasia
